University of London External Programme

This website outlines a number of qualifications available for study in Guyana through the University of London External Programme. This programme is pursued by over 32,000 students in 180 countries throughout the world. Nations University is delighted to be able to join with London University in bringing this programme to Guyana. Bachelor of Laws (LLB)


Earn a LLB Law Degree from the University of London (UK) without leaving Guyana

Programme Structure:

There are three paths to the LLB degree according to the qualifications you have at present.

Pre-Law year:

For persons with 5 SESC subjects at Grade 3 or above, a one year Pre Law course is undertaken. This will comprise the following Cambridge University courses: Law at Advanced Subsidiary and Advanced Level, Psychology and English Language at Advanced Subsidiary Level. This will comprise four evenings of study per week.

Entrance to the LLB course:

This is for persons who have completed 6th Form and have CAPE or AS/AL qualifications in at least two subjects. The LLB comprises 12 units which can be completed in 4 years. Units in year one are: Criminal Law, Law of Contract and Public Law. This will comprise three evenings of study per week.

Graduate entry to the LLB course:

This is for persons with a full degree from a recognized University. In this case the LLB degree will comprise 9 units which can be completed in 3 years. This will comprise three evenings of study per week.

Application Deadlines:

Pre-Law year: no deadline but classes start September 13th, 2010
LLB or Graduate entry to LLB course: September 17th, 2010.
The application has to be received by London University by September 17th.

Fees:
  • Pre-Law year: (1 year)
    • Total fee payable to Nations University is G$270,000 for the year. (G$90,000 per term for three terms).

  • LLB degree (4 years):

  • Fees payable to Nations University for three units:
    • G$462,000 per year.
    • $231,000 in September 2009 and G$231,000 in January 2010.

  • Fees payable to University of London for three units per year (depending on exchange rate)
    • G$480,000 per year. This comprises:
    • Application fee: G$21,840
    • Registration Fee: (payable by November 2009): G$264,860
    • Exam Fee: (payable by January 2010) : $193,300

  • Graduate entry: (3 years)
    • The fees are the same per year but the LLB degree is completed in 3 not 4 years as the student completes 9 rather than 12 units.

Study Materials:

Your fees include the supply of detailed study materials from the University of London. These are sent soon after your registration fee is received in London. Nations University also has a comprehensive law library for use by the students.

Entrance Requirements:
  • Pre-Law Year:
    • 5 CSEC or 5 O Levels at Grade 3 or above

  • Direct entry to LLB:
    • 5 CSEC or 5 O Levels at Grade 3 or above
    • 1 Advanced Level and 2 Advanced Subsidiary
    • 2 Full CAPE subjects (ie two year programme)

  • Graduate entry:
    • Full first degree from a recognized University

Dispatch of study materials:

Your fees include the supply of detailed study materials from the University of London. These will be sent shortly after your registration form is received in London. This is another reason why you need to register far ahead of the final deadline.

BSc Degree Programme

The following Degree Programmes are available:
  • BSc Business
  • BSc Economics
  • BSc International Relations
  • BSc Management
  • BSc Sociology
  • BSc Accounting & Finance
  • BSc Banking & Finance
Admission requirements for direct entry onto the Degree programme:
  • be at least 17 years old
  • have 2 A Levels (or one AL and two ASs)
  • have 3 other CSEC or O levels at grade C or above
  • have Maths CSEC or O Level at grade C or above
NB If you do not have AL or ASs it is possible to do the 'Access Route' and pursue two courses (in eg Economics, Sociology, Maths or International Relations) and then, on the basis of your performance in these courses, you can gain direct access to the Degree programme.

Admission requirements for Access Route:
  • be at least 17 years at 1st September
  • have 4 subjects at OL or CSEC at grade C or above
  • have Mathematics at OL or CSEC at grade C or above

Post Graduate Diploma in Development

The aims of this programme are to provide a thorough grounding in the principles of development and to promote the acquisition of critical skills for a wide range of real world professional situations.

Structure and Syllabus of the Diploma:

Diploma in Development has four Units:
  • # 135: World Development
  • # 109: Geographies of Development
  • # 04a/05a: Statistics and Mathematics

  • and either
  • #11: International Relations

  • or
  • #21: Principles of Sociology

Entrance requirements:

To be eligible to register for a Diploma for Graduates in Development from the University of London as an External student , you must:
  • Hold a full first degree from a University acceptable to the University of London
  • Show competence in Mathematics at least equivalent to a pass at CSEC/O Level at Grade 'C' or above
The programme can be completed in 1-5 years depending on how many units you wish to take each year. It is however feasible, if one worked very hard, to complete the programme in 12 months.
  • The total fee payable to University of London is £1,020. (G$408,000. depending on rate of exchange) if you complete the course in one year.
  • The total fee payable to Nations University is G$440,000.
  • Total fee therefore: G$848,000
Method of payment:

The fees are paid in installments on a semester basis. Fees for each course however need to be paid, in full, in advance of taking the course. If the student chooses to take the diploma over a two year period the financial undertaking is obviously then spread out over two years instead of one.
