Service Component
An integral part of the 6th Form is the promotion of service projects on the part of the students. One possible avenue of service is the Youth Can Move the World (YCMTW) project offered by Varqa Foundation. This is a youth leadership programme that focuses on social issues, the promotion of the arts and moral development. The purpose of the YCMTW programme is to empower the students to take responsibility for their own moral growth, to serve others in society and to care for the environment.
As the school moves over into its new premises we plan to offer a Junior Youth programme for 11-14 year olds in the neighbourhood. 6th Formers who choose this field of service would act as mentors to the youth helping them with their homework.
The acquisition and development of moral qualities and character is of prime importance in education and is afforded a prominent place in our curriculum. Moral Education should not be viewed as an 'additional subject', but as a means by which our students can develop through their interactions with one another.
It is easy to grasp an intellectual knowledge of something - to be able to memorise and store information that can be retrieved on recall. But to have understood the same information deeply enough for it to become part of us and influence our actions clearly goes beyond the acquisition of information.
We believe activity is the key. We give our 6th Formers the opportunities to be engaged in activities that enable them to explore and act in a moral domain. When given the opportunity students can clarify their own thoughts and behaviours, articulate their motives, and explain their own feelings and develop empathy for the feelings of others.
